“To change the conversation, we have to change who is part of it”

Young people shaping our Blackpool Convention

One of the highlights of our year at People’s Powerhouse is our annual Convention, and it is our hope that our 2020 Convention in Blackpool is still able to go ahead as planned in November.

Inclusion, diversity and co-design are at the very heart of our work and it is so important that we involve and include local voices and the voices of people who often are excluding from decision making.

We are therefore delighted that we are joining forced with Headstart in Blackpool to bring some of the young people they work with on to the planning and ideas team behind the Convention.

So, who is getting involved?:

Lindsay is 19 and lives in the countryside village of Stalmine, Poulton-le-Fylde. She is part of the Youtherapy Youth Team, a Young carer and has been part of the CAMHS redesign process. Lindsay became disabled as a child and has got to the stage of needing a wheelchair due to het condition progressing.

She also trains puppies up from 8 weeks to be assistance dogs for people in wheelchairs, autistic children and people with dementia for the charity Dogs For Good. Lindsay is really looking forward to challenging herself with this project, making a difference to others in her area and also making new friends.

Kate is a young person who lives in Blackpool, she is a member and the secretary of Blackpool youth council as well as a POSH ambassador.

She is really looking forward to this project: "I want and hope to improve my community." A fun fact about Katie is that she can make a noise that sounds like a dolphin, something we are all looking forward to hearing at our first planning meeting.

We will also be joined by Sam who is the youth engagement worker for Headstart, Vicki from Blackpool resilience revolution and April who is the Participation and Engagement Coordinator at URPotential.

"I am very excited to be joined by this team of people as we beginning to develop our ideas and thinking towards our Blackpool Convention."

The Convention will be held at Blackpool Winter Gardens on the 17 November 2020.
